The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) at Carter BloodCare is one
of a network of NMDP Donor Centers throughout the United States. The NMDP
was created in 1986, it is a nonprofit organization that facilitates unrelated
donor stem cell transplants for patients with life threatening blood diseases
that do not have matching donors in their families. The NMDP provides a
single point of access for all source of blood stem cells used in transplantation:
marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical cord blood. The Registry is able
to search its own database and provide physicians with information on multiple
stem cell sources for life saving transplants. Since in began operations
in 1987, the NMDP has:
|
Recruited a diverse Registry of more than 4
million potential volunteer marrow and blood
stem cell donors. |
|
Provided Transplants to more than 20,000 patients. |
|
Developed education and recruitment initiatives
to increase diversity of the Registry. |
|
Increased the number of minority patients receiving
transplants each year. |
|
Developed patient advocacy services. |
|
Established a system of listing cord blood units
within it own national Registry. |
The National Marrow
Donor Program at Carter BloodCare lists over 50,000 potential volunteer
marrow/stem cell donors and has coordinated 140 unrelated marrow/stem cell
transplants for patients around the world since its beginning.
Carter
BloodCare's program was the first in Texas. Since 1988, Carter BloodCare's Program
has committed to a spirit of recruitment formimg
the basis of the program's continued growth.
Currently, NMDP volunteers at
Carter BloodCare help to organize fund-raising events so that more donors
are always being added to the Registry. An annual goal of over $50,000 is
needed to be raised to enhance the local NMDP program & to increase
the number of educational and recruitment opportunities.
